ahem, a letter

So its been a while since I've done a Dear.... Letter (see previous ones by clicking the tag below), but lets drag this one on back up in the posting...

Dear nameless birthday-party-supply-company-who-sent-me-a-magazine-today,

For the record, dear supply company, it is totally NOT LEGIT to send a magazine and then have the products on "limited availability" or "out of stock" ... um, I'm sorry..did you actually mail this out months ago and I somehow missed the "stocked" supplies, because I got PEOPLE who work for the POST OFFICE that will totally back me up on my mail not getting "lost" or "delayed" on their watch. And, dear company, if indeed, my mail was direct from me to you, exactly how many supplies were you NOT planning on making once you shamelessly promoted them to birthday planning mothers all over. And PLEASE tell me how the solid color plates and tableware are in such high demand that you have them in limited quantities, but I can buy TWENTY of the extremely character-ized party sets without any quantity issues...especially since those are TWICE as expensive as the solid colors?

And for the record, while we're on it, IN WHAT WORLD do sets of napkins or dessert plates need to come in packs of 18? I mean, really, who says "I think I'll have a party of 18 today...not 15 or 20, but 18...that seems like a GREAT balance between not too big and not too small!

Sincerely,
Next Time Your Magazine is Going in the Trash EVEN if it did catch me with its $5 off coupon this time.

I am WISE to your SCHEMES!

No, I don't think its to much to ask

Dear Esteemed Grocery Bagger,
I know, I know. There are 5 million cooler places you could be other than the end of the checkout line. I'm sure no one has dashed your dreams of having lots of money without having to put any work into it...I'm sure you're dreaming of being a basketball star, or celebrity musician, or really, anything that would get you out of your coordinated polo and khaki pants. That I can understand.

However, I can NOT understand how despite the fact that I have placed my items in the order/groupings that I'd like them to be bagged, therefore making YOUR job require even less thought, that you continually failed to see that is what I'm attempting to have accomplished. Beleive it or not, people prefer that all their cold stuff be in the bag together. They also appreciate it, if that one random heavy bottled item (be it pickles or salsa or whatever) not end up in the same bag as the squishy chips. And speaking of chips, give them some respect. Shoving them into the bag only crushes the chips and my dreams of opening a bag that is more whole chips than slivers. And while I know you find it hard to believe that all that stuff came from one buggy, I'd appreciate it if you'd refrain from stacking bags on top of each other. I'm not the best at spacial rationings, but even I can tell that you don't put the bag of potato chips on the bottom. And, here's an idea, how about actually USING the under cart rack for those heavy items. Now, there's a back breaker!

So, please, for the love of my grocery sanity, either get out of the way and let me bag my own, or honor my system!

Sincerely,
Yours Truly

ahem, you. are. dead.

Dear 3-letter named pharmacy that used to have my allegience,

Today, you are dead to me. Possibly for forever.

Yesterday, I went to pick up my script. Like normal. Except, you, dear pharmacy, had refilled the wrong one. So you asked me to come back. So I politely agreed.

I came back. You, dear pharmacy, proceed to tell me that my script has expired. Despite the fact that it was just written in July and only been filled one time. And that it will be tomorrow.

Well, I'm sorry dear pharmacy, but if I could wait until tomorrow I wouldn't be here today.

So today I sent Mikie. Because he was being a good sport. Until, dear pharmacy, you proceed to tell him that the script hasn't been referred back from the doctor. To whom I call, who says you haven't sent anything. To whom then calls back, and says they have. Reconfirms that they are sending now.

So, dear pharmacy, I call you again. Second phone call, third visit in, different employee each and every time. To which you tell me, again, that its not there...until, "oh look, it just came in"

So what do I ask dear pharmacy? Can I get my script today?

Oh, it'll take about 30 minutes.

How convienent. Since neither of us can be in thirty minutes without rearranging the whole day.

Pharmacy, you are dead to me.

(and yes, I realize that I could avoid some of this headache by not waiting until the day needed to pick up refills, but that is not as important as my compliants at this time)

Girls,

You two are something else. You keep me and your daddy on our toes (and sometimes at the end of our rope). You both are growing so quickly and have personalities to boot. Here is what you are up to this month:

Bowen,
Girl, you are a force to be reckoned with...and we love it. You are very opinionated and often shriek out if something isn't going just like you want it to...even if its something as simple as a baby doll you are trying to put into a chair. You are having a hard time reconciling the word "no" with "don't do that again"...especially when it comes to the buttons on the DVD player. This month, well, last month in July...you decided to start walking and you are really getting going now. You are learning to walk semi-normally instead of with your arms reaching straight up for balance. You love the Cedarmont Kids DVD sing-a-long that we have...especially "Give Me That Old TIme Religion." You can do "If you are happy and you know it" with us...and "This little piggy." You can say: book, no, now, Hayley, mama, Daddy, Breezy (well, you said it once), red, ball, uh oh, more. You love cheerios and pretty much any food that is given to you. You will eat a snack and a meal within minutes of each other. You are really funny about the bathtub. You like it best when it doesn't have any water in it. You have gotten better at staying in the tub when there is water in it (we used to call you the world's quickest bather) but you have ZERO interest in sitting down. Its quite funny, but you stand the entire time you are in the tub. You have started "scrubbing" which consists of you reaching down and picking up a handful of bubbles and scrubbing your tummy and left arm. You always smirk and laugh when I ask you if you are soggy or stinky..this week you even told me "no!" when I asked if you were stinky and you weren't. I hope that is a good sign for potty training in the future. Your sister can make you laugh like no one else. I'm pretty sure your Big Dave is your favorite person...but you love anyone who is up and moving and going...or eating. You are slimming up and looking more and more like a toddler. Your hair has gotten curly and I hope it stays that way. You wake up super super happy in the morning. You are our alarm clock...you talk and babble and kick and jump and throw everything out of your crib. You usually call for Dadddeeee but if he doesn't come quick enough you start calling for Hayley. This week you had a rough nap time on Sunday and ended up in the bed with me and daddy...its the only time since you've been t-tiny that you ever slept with us, you like to be left to yourself when you sleep. You have a pink blanket that is your favorite that you wad up and sleep on top of. We managed to break you of the bottle without too much fuss and you are starting to gnaw on your thumb and fingers so you may end up like your sister with two fingers in your mouth when you are tired. We also get tickled at you because if you get tired and ready for bed, you'll just lay in the floor on your back and continue to play, but roll and lay around until someone takes you to bed. You love music and dance it up to the little jukebox that came with the diner set. You are simply something else

A Letter to My Girls

Girls,
You two are something else. You keep me and your daddy on our toes (and sometimes at the end of our rope). You both are growing so quickly and have personalities to boot. Here is what you are up to this month:

Hayley,
You are just 4 days away from being 3. You ask every day when its bedtime if when we wake up its going to be your birthday. You are very very excited about starting big girl school and dance school. You love to pretend and you play a lot of imitation. You are very creative in your pretend play and very detailed. You often give us answers that are not true to questions that are... like last week when you told me you got the boo boo on your leg because "I was climbing a sycamore tree and an alligator bit me on the leg!" right. exactly. You have a ton of inflection and tones to your speech. You mimic faces and expressions like a pro...especially when you are repeating something back to us like "look at what this baby did" or "good job bowen." You love music and dancing. You love to pretend to be having a dance show or swimming. You sometimes have a little more attitude that me and your daddy are prepared for. You are very independent when you decide to do something yourself and you are very quick to learn new ideas and things. You are not a morning person at all...unless you've had plenty of time to wake up and waller it out on your own. Your favorite drink is milk...chocolate if you have a choice but you don't get it often. Your favorite song is "Working on A Building" off of one of Daddy's CDs. You wear your bathing suits whenever you can. You like to do your own shoes and sometimes your own clothes. You could spend hours in the bathtub. You like for your toes to be painted...especially if your Breeze does it. Aunt Mischa is quite possibly your favorite person ever...but it would be tough to say for certain because your Breeze & Big Dave, Grandmama and Granddaddy rank pretty high in your opinion as well. You love making new friends but you are very bashful when you first meet someone. Your daddy and I get tickled sometimes because you will just go and stand very close and watch someone before you try to talk or play with them. You are definitely a studier.

Dear Blog...

Hi. We haven't met recently. Sorry about that. I'll try to be back more regularly with interesting stuff to say. We are currently spending at least 3 days a week without internet in the evenings so my ability to upload photos and get posts rolling has suffered.

Please don't forget me.

Dear...

Dear Pampers,
You know I love you. However, I must request, for the second time that you stop calling my daughter a pre-schooler and you certainly don't need to inform me that she is 31 months old. I mean, I know I registered her for K3... and she will start dance in the fall... and I know she looks like this...

BUT I TELL YOU - PRESCHOOLER SHE IS NOT!

AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!

Dear Spring,
You know how much I delight in your warm sunshine, slight breezes, clear starry nights and afternoons spent in the backyard swing. You know that you are my favorite. However, if at all possible, could you please, please, please with all your might eliminate the effects of your "fever" that has rampantly spread all around me and made grown people lose their minds.

Love,

Meghan

Dear....

Dear applicants-who-want-a-job,

Please take the following recommendations to mind, heart and practice before you complete an application. (In no particular order, other than the fact that I'm giving them numbers, because I like numbers better than bullets, which is the longest totally unneccesary sidenote ever.)

  1. Get a responsible sounding email address. If you are going to list an email address, please don't let it be an indicator into your personal life, like thebestbabyboo or iloveafamouspopstar, just a simple first name/last name or initial set at a respectable domain, not yourmamaisacutie.com (note: I don't know if this is a real email host and my apologies if it is)
  2. Get rid of your ringback tone. You don't want the first impression of an potential employer to be founded on the music which reflects your current love/hate relationship with someone or your dance music pick of the week. Likewise, make sure your voicemail is simple, direct and doesn't involve phrases like "holla at ya" or "this is sweet thang".
  3. Don't call every day. If an employer tells you there are no openings in the area you are interested in (or the shifts or days or what not), a call every 1-2 weeks will suffice to check for openings. If the employer posts job openings online, always check there before calling and calling and calling the office. While consistency and earnesty is a good quality in an employee, it can send a message that you are otherwise unemployable and thus relying on this facility as your only job consideration.
  4. Get somewhere quiet when you are on the phone with a potential employer. I have kids, I know that you can't control kids volumes. I have a TV, I know that you can control the TV volume. But you can control where you are when you are on the phone. If at all possible (even if you have to say "Excuse me for one minute while I step outside") make sure there is not a lot of background noise.
  5. Be aware of who is answering your phone and the way that they answer it. Or, the way they scream your name if its for you. Also, indicate if the number you listed is a family member's home so that employers aren't caught off guard when someone other than you answers.
  6. Don't call an employer back without listening to their message. With caller ID on most phones now, its tempting to call and say "Did you call me?!" Give a missed call from an unidentified number time to leave a message, most potential employers will do this!
  7. Be honest on your application. And fill it out completely. Don't say your background check is clear if it isn't. Don't say your rate of pay was anything other than what it was. Give the honest reason why you left previous employers. Give details, details, details. Make sure your references and previous employer numbers can be called and are operational. Even if it takes you an hour, make sure you've answered all the questions and completed all the information and signature lines.
  8. If you get called for an interview, please get dressed in something other than jeans or sweats and t-shirts. You don't have to be in full-out dress suits, but you should look more dressed than everyday clothes (even if you are being considered for a non-dressy position). Likewise, don't let your "dressy" clothes be the same as your "party" clothes. Black dress pants and a respectable top are most appropriate for most interview situations.
  9. Please do not bring your child, your cell phone or your designated driver/transportation into the office with you. If you do have these things with you, have them situated in the lobby or waiting area before you interact with the potential employer.
  10. Be honest about your willingness to work the shifts that are discussed during your interview. If you can't or don't want to work those shifts, tell the employer that you aren't available. Don't take a position that you have no intentions of working when scheduled, this will do you more harm than good if you are hired. Also, if you work another job, be honest about scheduling conflicts and routine scheduling at your other employer.
While these things may not guarantee that you will receive a position or an offer or an interview, they will make you a better applicant. Or at least, a better applicant the way I see it, which since its my blog, is the only way that matters... HAH! NOT!

a little reflection

Dear Self,

When one gets to the grocery store and has survived 6 of 20 aisles with 2.5 year old in buggy, do not be befuzzled by the items remaining on your list.

Regular light bread.

And then have the following conversation in your head:

Huh? Why would I need that? Is that my handwriting? Yes, its definitely my handwriting.... but why would I need regular light bread? I don't even call it light bread... so that doesn't make any sense.... and I've got whole grain bread on the list 5 items up... maybe I just forgot that I already had whole grain bread and meant to write it again... I mean, why would I want regular light bread? I'm not planning on having sandwhiches... huh, I must have meant the whole grain.

Dear self,

That would be: regular light bulbs.

You know, to actually have a working light in the kitchen other than the built-in over-the-stove hood light.

which makes WAY more sense

especially when you get home and put groceries up in the dark.

Dear Noon

Dear Noon/Lunch,

Please get here soon. I'm starving and have depleted my snack supply of desirable munchables for this morning.

Love,

PS If its not too much to ask, can my french fries be super hot and salty from the cafeteria? Thanks a bajillion.

Dear... W2s

Dear W2s,

Please stop trying to kill me. Or make me have a heart attack. Or live in a state of constant panic.

I have problem solved 3 levels of crisis already.

And now I'm on a deadline.

As in, don't tear up anymore because you've got to be finished today.

The end.

Dear 2011,
One of these days, I'll get around to blogging in you. Until then, please enjoy some of my favorite bloggers posts which are listed on the right edge of your screen, or you know, actually be productive outside of the internet world.

Until next time,

dear sunkist

Dear Sunkist,
I have been a loyal fan for most of my life. I have only abandoned our friendship in times of pregnancy. That is, until now. I had forgiven you for disappearing out of the vending machines at work. I had even extended that forgiveness to disappearing in 20 ounce bottles at the gas stations. However, now, I am drawing the line. I purchased a case of you *just like I do every 2 weeks or so* just the other week. When I opened your first can, it was flat. And so on and so forth through the whole case. I sent you a polite little letter on your website telling you about my less than stellar purchase. You were kind enough to respond, I'll give you that, but I will also let you know, that I will no longer be buying your product. You sent me a $2 coupon..um, hello, that doesn't buy a whole case of your soda... if you were still in 20 ounce form, that would buy 1 of you and give me a few cents in change back. This is entirely unacceptable... I have been a loyal customer for life and have never sent in negative feedback to you before. I am not an abuser of the Customer Service process. However, you have insulted me with your meanial coupoun. Hencetotherefore, we are done.

dear applicants

I am glad that you have decided that getting a job is in your favor. If its not too much to ask, please make the following considerations before you submit your application...

1. If your email address involves nicknames, references to sexy, boo, or anything else that gives me a glimpse into your personal life, please don't list it as a means of contact on your application. If you don't want to part with your identity as "miss thang" then at least get a new email address that is generic that you can use for applications.

2. If you are going to list your cell phone as a primary means of contact, please consider changing your ring back music from Saturday night jams... you may also want to re-record your voicemail. just a thought.

3. English is not a foreign language. Please don't list it as such.

Sincerely,

Meghan

call me jaded

Dear Sunkist,
You have had my soda devotion for a long, long, long time. I have packed cases of you to go on trips when I was in high school and you have always been a staple fixture in my fridge. However, you are no longer available in the vending machines at work. I considered this a minor set back, until this week, when I bought a case of you at the grocery store and every.can.I've.opened.has.been.flat.

I have already sent you a "feedback" on your site, but wanted to throw this letter in for good measure.

If you keep up this behavior I will have to switch my loyalties for good. Dr. Pepper has started calling my name.

letter

Dear Mexican Restaurant that is Coming To Arlington,

I don't even know your name but I'm pretty sure I will love you. I didn't know you were coming to town until yesterday, but I think you need to know that I would like you to open as of yesterday. I have not been able to get over my excitement of your presence since I heard the news. Yes, I realize that is probably very, very sad in the realm of things, however, I currently have very limited lunch options and none of them (while tasty when needed) really hit the spot. Please, please, please make sure your cheese dip and chips are tasty and that your taco salads and nachos are above par. If so, you will have my undivided lunch devotion.

Sincerely,
meghan

dear papers

Dear papers that need filing,

I hate you. Please stop multiplying at night when there is no one here to supervise you. Also, if you could train yourself to jump into alpha order when I'm not looking that would be much appreciated. Please don't make me send my two year old with crayons in after you.

in disgust,
meghan
