My Favorite Christmas...UNWRAPPING!

No, I don't have a better way to say that.... moving right along...

When we were in elementary school, one Christmas we got a trampoline. And not one of those super safety trampolines, like they have now, it was one of those just a mat and metal springs trampoline, it was good times. But I digress,

Mom did the coolest thing that year...she had some yarn that was tied in a bow and then it wound its way all through the house, under chairs and around sofas and the whole nine yards until it went out the back door to the trampoline... Best. Unwrapping. Adventure. Ever.

Christmas Quiz...woo hoo!

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Um, this year, bags. Because I can't tie pretty bows and I've run my stash of saved bows to the ground. I only like wrapping presents that are symmetrical and don't have funky edges or bumpy sides.

2. Real tree or Artificial? Artificial all the way. I've never had a real tree and I don't plan to. I like the whole less than 5 minutes set-up, pre-lit thing.

3. When do you put up the tree? The Day after Thanksgiving. No compromises. All decorations go out on Friday.

4. When do you take the tree down? We usually start packing decorations up the day after Christmas, but since that's a Sunday this year, it will probably be sometime during the first week after Christmas.

5. Do you like eggnog? Have you met me? Ewww, no, gross.

6. Favorite gift received as a child? Hmm... typewriter (geek I know!), Walkman (we were cool I tell ya, cool!), trampoline (that has the best "finding" story ever...remind me to tell you later)

7. Hardest person to buy for? Men. All of them. That's why Michael does it.

8. Easiest person to buy for? The girls. too easy of a questions, outside immediate family, Lane.

9. Do you have a nativity scene? Yes, two actually. I have a Willowtree nativity that I absolutely LOVE (and I just found out I am still missing 2 pieces...there is a goat and an ox set that I need!) and then we have a VeggieTales nativity for the girls. Although this year, we opted to put the Willowtree nativity on the altar at the church so it would be safe from little hands.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Um, both? Mom handles the massive Powell Christmas cards and we put a Christmas plug on the newsletters, both of which go by USPS (we're postal, what can we say!?) But I usually do some e-cards too.

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?  Ummmm... nothing is coming to mind right away, I'm going to claim that as that I have always been a gracious receiever...either that or I blocked the entire experience out. Additional edit: After I posted this, I remember the worst gift I've ever seen given... one year (maybe 5 or so years ago now), Mischa wanted a puppy for Christmas, and she was told no all the way around since she was still in college and what not and what for...anywho, my Meme (who has never played a joke like this in my entire LIFE, and is also known for doing what parents have said no about) decided she would get Mischa a puppy. So she waited until everyone was done opening gifts, went to another room and brought in a box, with holes in it, and made a presentation of it to Mischa, who was growing more excited by the minute...until she opened it, and it was a stuffed animal puppy and oh.my.word. it was awful. tears and the whole nine yards. worst, gift, ever.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? um, I don't really get into Christmas movies to the point of having a favorite... I do remember Miracle on 34th Street being a hot topic when it came out though.

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? If I'm lucky, October, but most definitely by November. We try to be done in the first week or so of December

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? If I have, it was probably for Dirty Santa...

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Ham and dumplings, not mixed together though, that would be gross. Oh, and poundcake. Oh, and rice krispie treats. Oh, and rolls.

16. Lights on the tree (colored or clear)? White lights, there is no compromising.

17. Favorite Christmas song? O Come O Come Emmanuael.

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Um, both...ish... we have Christmas eve at Michael's parents (only 5 minutes away), lunch with the Lumpkins (10 minutes out) and supper with the Powell's (ten minutes out), but we do Christmas morning at home.

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer's? I think so, but I'm not going to try to sing a loud to remind myself.

20. Angel, star or ribbon on top of tree? We used to have a Bass Pro Shops logo... now we have a Santa hat.

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Christmas morning except for gift exchange with Michael's family on Christmas Eve.

22. Favorite children's Christmas song? Little Drummer boy... oh or, I Want A Hippopotomus For Christmas.

23. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? Um, long lines everywhere starting 2 weeks before Christmas... eww, I am not a good waiter.

24. Favorite ornament theme or color? Um, we have all sentimental ornaments, so I can't pick a favorite.

25. Turkey or ham on Christmas day? Both are served and tasty but I will most likely eat my weight in ham

26. What do you want for Christmas this year? I'm really not good with lists... I always have a good list until time to have a list then I lose my list. My list this year is mostly books, I just spotted the Willowtree Ox & Goat pieces for the nativity so those go on there, and I could use some clothes. Like I said, not really good at lists.

27. Does anyone in your family dress up as Santa? No, that would be a little weird. Although we have been known to require the present distributor to wear a Santa cap.

28. Age you discovered who Santa was? I don't really remember, but I think I pretending that I already knew that... you know, because I was so cool and all (NOT!)... but the rule at the Powell house still is... if you do not believe, you will not receive.

29. Eggnog, hot chocolate, or apple cider? None of the above, I'll take a big cup of sweet tea please.

30. Traditional colors (red and green) or other colors? I like the lime green, red, silver combination...but really, I don't decorate in colors so I guess it doesn't matter. I have seen the blue and silver together and its really pretty for someone else, but I would want to stay closer to traditional colors I think.

31. Do you have any Christmas decorations on your roof? No, we don't do outside lights.

32. How does Santa get into your house? Chimney or magic key? Ok, I've never heard of a "magic key" and we don't have a Chimney so, I dunno how he gets in, he just does, and my girls aren't old enough to ask that yet, so I still have time to prepare.

33. Do you prefer gifts or gift cards? Depends on the giver... but really I'm fine with either, hey, its a present, that's good enough for me!

34. Favorite children's Christmas Cartoon? How The Grinch Stole Christmas, yes, that will do.

My Favorite Christmas... Forgotten Song!

I always forget all of the good songs that are out there at Christmas time... I've decided I'm making a list (and checking it twice) and then not forgetting where I put it at so I remember them for next year.... I heard this song on the radio this morning and its now My Favorite (Forgotten) Christmas Song!

Song/Lyrics by 4Him:

I’m sure he must have been surprised

At where this road had taken him

Cause never in a million lives

Would he have dreamed of Bethlehem

And standing at the manger

He saw with his own eyes

The message from the angel come to life

And Joseph said

Why me, I’m just a simple man of trade

Why Him with all the rulers in the world

Why here inside this stable filled with hay

Why her, she’s just an ordinary girl

Now I’m not one to second guess

What angels have to say

But this is such a strange way to save the World

To think of how it could have been

If Jesus had come as He deserved

There would have been no Bethlehem

No lowly shepherds at His birth

But Joseph knew the

Reason love had to reach so far

And as he held the Savior in his arms

He must have thought

Now, I’m not one to second guess

What angels have to say

But this is such a strange

Way to save the world

Such a strange way, this is

Such a strange way

A strange way to save the world

A strange way to save the world

Snuggled in among my other Christmas towels on the oven...

My Favorite Christmas...HYMN!

My all-time favorite Christmas hymn (so much so that I wish we sang it all year...its applicable!) is

O Come O Come Emmanuel!

I mean, hello, what is more true that the need for Jesus incarnate to come right into the middle of our lives, our homes and our society? I just think of what it must have been for old testament beleivers... waiting on a Messaiah, anticipating a new life through Christ... much in the same ways we look for Jesus to move in our lives now... or how we call him into our churches or into revival.

I just. heart. this. song.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel! Has Come To Thee O Israel!

My Favorite Christmas.... Shopping

My favorite Christmas shopping is for STOCKING STUFFERS... by far, my favorite thing to shop for... I have to watch myself or I'll spend the equivalent of a present on my stocking stuffers. Especially now that Mom made us the fabulous super stockings!! Stockings are also my favorite part of present opening!

My Favorite Christmas....RULE

Yes, I have rules about Christmas, the utmost important one is simply this.

I
and
I
alone
get to open
all the Christmas Cards.
ESPECIALLY
the ones
that are
pictures.

The end.

Also, I think this is the rule at Mischa's house too...not that T opens all that much mail, or at least I would guess not. And yes, this rule stems from our sisterly competition growing up to be the one to open the Christmas cards daily. And yes, Michael has learned to back away slowly and leave the cards untouched on the table.

thank.you.very.much.
